It’s a record-setter — or should we say record-seller? With its 6 wins at the 79th annual Tony Awards, director Joe Mantello’s production of Death of a Salesman has become the most-award-winning play revival in Tony Awards history.

The production at the Winter Garden Theatre took home trophies for Best Revival of a Play, Best Featured Actress in a Play (for Laurie Metcalf), Best Direction of a Play (Mantello), Best Scenic Design of a Play (Chloe Lamford), Best Lighting Design of a Play (Jack Knowles), and Best Sound Design of a Play (Mikaal Sulaiman).

The record was previously held by four play revivals that won four awards each: the 1999 Salesman revival, A Doll’s House in 1997, The Heiress in 1995, and An Inspector Calls in 1994, the first year the Best Revival category was split between plays and musicals.

Death of a Salesman also became the first play in history to win four Best Revival Tonys, building on an existing record: Arthur Miller’s drama was already the only play to have won three Best Revival Tonys, for its 1984, 1999, and 2012 productions. Additionally, the show won the 1949 Best Play Tony Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama upon its initial premiere.

Considered one of the greatest American plays of all time, Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman centers on the Loman family — Willy (Nathan Lane), Linda (Metcalf), and sons Biff (2026 Tony nominee Christopher Abbott) and Happy (Ben Ahlers) — reckoning with an American dream they’ll never achieve. Mantello’s spare, temporally ambiguous production “proves the play's sharp thorns have not dulled over time,” per New York Theatre Guide’s review.
