Danny Burstein sets record as most Tony-nominated male actor
Burstein's 2026 Tony Award nomination for the family drama Marjorie Prime is his ninth overall, and he won in 2020 for Moulin Rouge! The Musical.
With his 2026 Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Play for Marjorie Prime, Danny Burstein is now the most Tony-nominated male actor in history, with nine total across his career.
The theatre mainstay earned his first Tony nomination for Golden Boy in 2006, 14 years after making his Broadway debut in 1992. In the past 20 years, he has been nominated in all four acting categories in which he is eligible: Best Leading Actor in a Play and Musical, and Best Featured Actor in a Play and Musical. He won in 2021, on his seventh nomination, for playing Harold Zidler in Moulin Rouge! The Musical.
In Jordan Harrison's tech-forward family drama Marjorie Prime, he starred opposite June Squibb, Cynthia Nixon, and Christopher Lowell as family members who use robotic holograms to "revive" their deceased relatives. The play premiered off Broadway in 2015, and the fall 2025 production marked its Broadway premiere. Anne Kauffman directed both versions.
Burstein isn't the only record-setter in the Marjorie Prime cast: Squibb, who's nominated for Best Featured Actress in a Play, is now the oldest Tony-nominated actor in history at 96 years old.
