The Off-Broadway revival of [*Danny and the Deep Blue Sea*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/32606-danny-and-the-deep-blue-sea) has set a lottery ticket policy, with $20 lottery tickets available for all performances via TodayTix. Set at a desolate bar in the Bronx, *Danny and the Deep Blue Sea* chronicles the unlikely connection between self-pitying strangers. Abbott stars as Danny, a laborer who lives with his mom, and Plaza is Roberta, a divorcée with a teenage son. The pair engage in a stand-off over who’s got it worse. *Danny and the Deep Blue Sea* premiered at the Humana Festival of New Plays at the Actors Theater of Louisville in 1984 before transferring off Broadway with John Turturro and June Stein in the lead roles. In 2004, Second Stage Theatre produced the 80-minute drama with Adam Rothenberg and Rosemarie DeWitt. This latest iteration marks the directorial debut of actor Jeff Ward.

## How many plays has John Patrick Shanley written?

John Patrick Shanley has written 23 plays. The Bronx native’s works grapple with complex issues, like mortality, faith, and interpersonal relationships. Shanley is best known for *Doubt: A Parable*, which won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. His plays also include *Danny and the Deep Blue Sea*, *Savage in Limbo*, *The Dreamer Examines His Pillow*, *Outside Mullingar*, and *Prodigal Son*, among others. 

Shanley also writes and directs for the screen. In 1987, Shanley won the Academy Award for Best Screenplay for *Moonstruck*, and two of its stars, Cher and Olympia Dukakis, also took home Oscars for their performances. Shanley’s film adaptation of *Doubt: A Parable* was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2009.

Academy Award winner John Patrick Shanley wrote *Danny and the Deep Blue Sea*, his second play, in 1984. Aubrey Plaza, best known for *Parks & Recreation* and *The White Lotus*, makes her professional stage debut in *Danny and the Deep Blue Sea* off Broadway in fall 2023.

Aubrey Christina Plaza was born June 26, 1984 in Wilmington, Delaware. While in school, she participated in theatrical productions with the Wilmington Drama League and went on to study film at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, graduating in 2006.

Plaza began her career in comedy, performing with institutions including the Upright Citizens Brigade and the Laugh Factory. She transitioned to screen acting with roles in movies like *Scott Pilgrim vs. The World*, and in 2009, she landed her breakout role as the deadpan April Ludgate on the sitcom *Parks & Recreation*. Plaza starred in the show until it ended in 2015, receiving widespread acclaim for her performance.

She gained further prominence in 2016 for starring in the film *Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates* opposite Zac Efron, Anna Kendrick, and Adam Devine, and the TV show *Criminal Minds* in a recurring role. Plaza ventured into producing with the films *The Little Hours* and *Ingrid Goes West* in 2017, both of which she also starred in. Between 2020 and 2022, Plaza produced and starred in two more films, *Black Bear* and *Emily the Criminal*; in between, she starred in the holiday rom-com *Happiest Season*.

In 2022, Plaza starred as the lawyer Harper Spiller in the second season of *The White Lotus*, earning Emmy and Golden Globe Award nominations. Christopher Abbott stars in the title role of *Danny and the Deep Blue Sea* off Broadway in fall 2023.

Christopher Jacob Abbott was born February 10, 1986 in Greenwich, Connecticut. He has worked extensively on both stage and screen and is known for roles in *Girls* and many independent films.

After studying acting at HB Studio in New York, he landed roles in his first two Off-Broadway plays in 2008: *Good Boys and True* and *Mouth to Mouth*. He returned to the stage two years later for *That Face*.

In 2011, Abbott made both his feature film debut (in *Martha Marcy May Marlene*) and Broadway debut (in *The House of Blue Leaves*, opposite Edie Falco and Ben Stiller). But it was his role as Charlie Dattolo in *Girls* that gained him widespread recognition in 2012. He appeared in 13 episodes, and his success led him to leading TV roles, including John Yossarian in a miniseries based on the novel *Catch-22*. Abbott earned a Golden Globe nomination for his performance.

Abbott's other Off-Broadway and regional credits include *Where We're Born*, *Fool for Love*, *John*, and *The Rose Tattoo* opposite Marisa Tomei.

In 2023, Abbott returns to the screen in *The Crowded Room* opposite Tom Holland, Amanda Seyfried, and Emmy Rossum, and he returns off Broadway in the latest revival of John Patrick Shanley's *Danny and the Deep Blue Sea*. Located in the West Village in Manhattan, the Lucille Lortel Theatre was first built 1926 as a 590-seat movie theatre. Converted into an Off-Broadway theatre in the early 1950s, the venue opened with *Maya* in June 1953.

In 1955, Louis Schweitzer acquired the building as an anniversary present for his wife, actress/producer Lucille Lortel. To celebrate her 81st birthday, the theatre was rechristened the Lucille Lortel Theatre in 1981. Since Lortel’s death, the Lucille Lortel Foundation has owned the theatre.

The Off-Broadway theatre company MCC Theater used the Lortel as its home base until it acquired its own venue in Hell's Kitchen.
