Danny and the Deep Blue Sea Information

Christopher Abbott and Aubrey Plaza star in Oscar winner John Patrick Shanley’s critically acclaimed play Danny and the Deep Blue Sea at the Lucille Lortel Theatre. Experience an emotionally charged evening of theatre as two down-and-out strangers connect over their deep-rooted issues at a bar. Get Danny and the Deep Blue Sea tickets on New York Theatre Guide.

Set at a desolate bar in the Bronx, Danny and the Deep Blue Sea chronicles the unlikely connection between self-pitying strangers. Abbott stars as Danny, a laborer who lives with his mom, and Plaza is Roberta, a divorcée with a teenage son. The pair engage in a stand-off over who’s got it worse. Verbal blows give way to physical, and the outcasts bare the deepest parts of themselves — charging the unlikely pair to leave the bar and go to Roberta’s bedroom.

Danny and the Deep Blue Sea premiered at the Humana Festival of New Plays at the Actors Theater of Louisville in 1984 before transferring off Broadway with John Turturro and June Stein in the lead roles. In 2004, Second Stage Theatre produced the 80-minute drama with Adam Rothenberg and Rosemarie DeWitt. This latest iteration marks the directorial debut of actor Jeff Ward.
