Could ‘Waitress’, starring Sara Bareilles return to Broadway?
The original Broadway run closed at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre in January 2020.
With the news that Broadway theatres can reopen at full capacity from Sept. 14, 2021, details on upcoming productions are being released. In an article from the Wall Street Journal, Waitress could return to the Great White Way just a year after it last closed.
Broadway producer Barry Weissler said to the Wall Street Journal that Waitress composer Sara Bareilles would lead the cast as Jenna Hunterson once more. During the original run, Bareilles played Jenna for three engagements.
Further details on a Waitress revival on Broadway, including additional casting, a venue and performance dates are to be announced.
Waitress began previews at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on Mar. 25, 2016, ahead of an official opening on Apr. 24, 2016. The four-time Tony Award-nominated musical ran for over three years, closing on Jan. 5, 2020.
With Broadway's reopening on Sept. 14, 2021, productions are gearing up for either an opening or reopening this fall. Six will reopen the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, with performances from Sept. 17, 2021, while The Phantom of the Opera will reopen at the Majestic Theatre on Oct. 22, 2021. Upcoming plays include Pass Over and Thoughts of a Colored Man, with performance dates to be confirmed.
