A revival of *Bob Fosse's Dancin'* is leaping, shuffling, and turning its way into New York after a pre-Broadway tryout in San Diego. The revival preserves Fosse's original Tony-winning choreography. Check back for *Bob Fosse's Dancin'* tickets on New York Theatre Guide.

*Bob Fosse's Dancin'* is a musical revue that pays tribute to various dance and musical styles. There is no plot or singing, just a company of dancers — 16 in the revival — performing two hours of awe-inspiring dance to music from classical to jazz to pop to operetta, and more. Multiple dance genres are represented, too, all with Fosse's angular, alluring, energetic flair. 

Though the choreography remains the same from 1978, when the show (then just called *Dancin'*) first premiered on Broadway, this revival gives the production a modern refresh, celebrating a fuller history of dance including its evolution since then.

*Dancin'* on Broadway first played at the Broadhurst Theatre, then transferred to the Ambassador Theatre, playing for 1,774 total performances. *Dancin'* was nominated for seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Fosse won Best Choreography, and Jules Fisher won for Best Lighting Design. The original company was led by Ann Reinking, a frequent collaborator of Fosse's who starred in his musical [*Chicago*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/22-chicago-tickets) and later choreographed the current revival of that show in his style.

Cilento was also part of that original run of *Dancin'* in New York; he received a Tony nomination for his performance. He directed the world premiere of the *Bob Fosse's Dancin'* revival at San Diego's Old Globe Theatre in spring 2022 and now directs its Broadway transfer.

## Who is Bob Fosse?

Bob Fosse changed the face of Broadway choreography. He's won eight Tony Awards for choreography on shows including *Damn Yankees*, *Redhead*, *Sweet Charity*, and *The Pajama Game*. Kander and Ebb's *Cabaret* and *Chicago* remain two of his most iconic shows; Fosse's name and choreography are as closely linked with those hit musicals as its songwriters are. He also directed and co-wrote multiple of his shows (like *Chicago*), and his legacy has been immortalized in countless other works like the TV miniseries *Fosse/Verdon* and *Fosse*, another dance revue.

Bob Fosse's Dancin’ is a musical, but not a traditional book musical. There’s a little dialogue; however, most of the storytelling, structured as a series of vignettes rather than one continuous plot, unfolds through movement in every imaginable dance genre. Fosse choreographed the whole show himself for its original run, and all his choreography remains for the revival. Cilento’s production premiered at the Old Globe in San Diego in 2022 before moving to Broadway.

The 1978 premiere production of *Bob Fosse’s Dancin’* in New York (then just called *Dancin’*) received seven Tony nominations. In addition to Cilento, Ann Reinking also received a Tony nomination for her performance in the original cast. She’s best known for her many collaborations with Fosse, including in *Chicago*, *Sweet Charity*, and his film *All That Jazz*.

*Dancin’* ultimately won two Tonys, including Best Choreography. Fosse won that award a total of eight times; he also won for shows including *Pippin*, *Damn Yankees*, *Sweet Charity*, and *The Pajama Game*.

During his career, he choreographed in lots of different styles, as showcased in *Bob Fosse's Dancin’* on Broadway. But he’s best known for coining his own distinct style of jazz, with sharp, strong hand motions and angular movements. Two shows he didn’t get choreography awards for — *Chicago* and *Cabaret* — still remain his best-known works featuring that sultry style of dance.

## What to Watch For

- Three members of the the original 1978 company of *Dancin'* are involved in the current Broadway revival: director Wayne Cilento, who got a Tony nomination for his 1978 performance; Christine Colby Jacques, who reproduced Fosse's choreography for the revival; and Kirsten Childs, who updated the script for 2023.
- Cilento has choreographed more than 10 Broadway shows, including a little musical called *Wicked*. Have you heard of it?
- Good dancin' never seemed so good! Neil Diamond currently has his own Broadway musical, *A Beautiful Noise*, but his song "Crunchy Granola Suite" is also featured in *Bob Fosse's Dancin'*, too.
- *Bob Fosse's Dancin'* also includes a few songs from other musicals, including *Gypsy*'s "Let Me Entertain You" and *Sweet Charity*'s "Big Spender."
- *Dancin'* isn't the only dance revue dedicated to Fosse; one called *Fosse* opened in 1999. That one was more of a tribute — Reinking co-created it after his death — whereas Fosse himself created *Dancin'*.

With two Bob Fosse dance revues in existence — 1978's [*Dancin'*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/24249-bob-fosses-dancin-tickets), now having its first revival at the [Music Box Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/music-box-theatre), and 1999's *Fosse* — comparisons are inevitable, so let me make mine and get on with it. *Fosse*, a minimalist highlight reel of his best-known choreography, reflects what most people associate with him today: black hats, black leotards, precise yet slinky movements in which even the isolated wag of a finger drips with sex appeal.

That show, created by Fosse's collaborators after his death, is a loving tribute to his singular mark on dance history. *Dancin'* similarly is; besides being produced by Fosse's daughter Nicole, this revival is directed by Wayne Cilento, a Tony-nominated member of the 1978 cast.

He's added in some famous Fosse numbers from other shows, but Cilento otherwise preserves Fosse's original *Dancin'* choreography, much of which pushes the boundaries of, and departs from, his style as we think of it. And by doing so, *Bob Fosse's Dancin'* (as the revival's title has been stylized) reminds us of the breadth of Fosse's talent and resurfaces a facet of his legacy we often forget: joy. *Dancin'* brims with it — in Fosse's moves, the dancers' soaring energy, the lively orchestra, and, thanks to all that, in the audience.

Joy manifests in many different ways in the *Dancin'* choreography, which is partitioned into a series of standalone vignettes. (Fosse didn't want the show to have a plot. A performer cheekily warns us about this, though that doesn't cancel out the fact that *Dancin'* is, objectively, a bit disjointed.) A major one is eroticism — this is Fosse, after all. His signature sultriness is on ample display in numbers like the dreamy quartet "Massage Parlor" and an explosive, all-too-short snippet of Fosse's *Sweet Charity* highlight "Big Spender" that left me craving more.

Another is gleeful showmanship — [razzle dazzle](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/22-chicago-tickets), if you will. Standout numbers like "Percussion" see the dancers showing off like preening peacocks, occasionally looking smugly at the audience as if to say, "How impressive am I?" Manuel Herrera excels in this regard, especially in the number "Backstreet Rivalry." He plays a city slicker out-dancing NYC newbie Cyril, danced by a similarly cocky Peter John Chursin.

And, of course, *Dancin'* regularly celebrates the bliss of simply, well, dancin'. The actors periodically deliver Fosse quotes that remind us a deep love for the art form was always on his mind. The purest proof is the Act 2 opener, "Sing, Sing, Sing," an exuberant whirlwind that goes from full-cast production number to trio to solo to duo and back to production number.  

Fosse's choreography is usually called cynical, and the Act 1 closer, "Dancin' Man," is the best example. The performers sing hopeful lyrics about wanting to "leave footsteps on the sands of time" – but they dress alike, dance alike, and float on and off stage, suggesting they're unlikely to be remembered. But even this number has become euphoric with time. Decades later, we know Fosse was one of the rare few to make that mark.

The production doesn't always trust the choreography to deliver these messages. Some numbers over-rely on pumped-up musical arrangements (and volume), busy projections, and hit-and-miss dialogue to drive home the thrill the audience should feel. Luckily, the impressive, athletic cast outshines it all.

Standouts include the alluring Kolton Krouse, whose delicious showcases include "Spring Chicken," featuring the choreography of *Cabaret*'s "Mein Herr." Jacob Guzman is effortlessly suave as the title character in "Mr. Bojangles" and later as the introducer of "Big Deal," a new sequence from Fosse's final musical from 1986. Ida Saki practically floats through her diverse numbers, from the tender pas de deux "If It Feels Good (Let It Ride)" to the martial "Rally Round the Flag."

Fosse, Cilento, and the cast remind us how powerful dance is as a storyteller. *Bob Fosse's Dancin'* doesn't just make old moves fresh — it makes us feel like we're discovering Fosse anew.

The Music Box Theatre was built in 1921 by theatrical producer Sam H. Harris to house Irving Berlin's musical revue *The Music Box*, written specifically for the venue. The first play to go up at the venue was 1925's *Cradle Snatchers*, and, ironically, the theatre has historically hosted more straight plays than musicals.

The Shubert Organization began acquiring shares in the Music Box Theatre from Harris in the 1920s. When Harris died in 1941, his wife sold half the shares in the theatre to the Shuberts, and half to Berlin.

In 2007, the Shubert Organization became the sole owners of the theatre. The Music Box Theatre's facade and interior are New York City landmarks.
