Ali Louis Bourzgui finds himself a Tony nominee for “being a little crazy” in ‘The Lost Boys’
The vampire star has been with the new musical for years and reflects on his nomination.
“I didn’t have this on my five-year plan, on my 10-year plan, or really any plan, so it's really a pleasant surprise,” Ali Louis Bourzgui said about his Tony Award nomination for playing a vampire in the Broadway musical The Lost Boys. “I'm just honestly feeling a sense of excitement and pride for the show as a whole.”
Based on the 1987 cult-hit movie of the same name, the story follows a mom and her two teen sons who discover a pack of vampires terrorizing their fictional coastal community of Santa Carla, California. Bourzgui belts high notes, bites unsuspecting necks, and defies gravity as the lead bloodsucker, David.
Making its world premiere on Broadway, The Lost Boys presented a fang-tastic and unique experience. “I've been working on this for over a year now,” Bourzgui said. “I've seen how the writing has changed and how the songs have evolved and how the characters have all evolved. I’ve really been a part of how this whole show has progressed.”
In all, The Lost Boys snagged 12 Tony nods, including ones for Best Musical, book, score, and direction by Michael Arden. Bourzgui credited Arden, who won Tonys for Maybe Happy Ending and Parade, for his “clear vision” and for creating an environment “that was so loving.”
Bourzgui, who made a splash two years ago as the title character in The Who’s Tommy, said playing a creature of the night is in his comfort zone.
“I've always craved being a little weird on stage,” he said, adding that to embody David he channeled David Bowie, David Byrne, and Tim Curry. “With this role, I really went for it in terms of giant, bold choices and kind of being a little crazy on stage.”
The Tony Awards will be handed out June 7 at Radio City Music Hall during a telecast hosted by P!NK. The awards will air live on CBS and stream on Paramount+.
