June 3, 2017. A 25-year-old former Air Force linguist named Reality Winner is surprised at her home by the FBI, interrogated, and then charged with leaking evidence of Russian interference in U.S elections. The FBI transcript of her interrogation is the heart of the Is This A Room play, in which an extraordinary human drama unfolds between the complex and witty Reality, and the agents who question her.
As Reality’s autonomy shrinks before her eyes, a simmering real-life thriller emerges, asking what it is to have honor in this American moment, and how the personal can reverberate globally.
Is This A Room first premiered in January 2019 at The Kitchen, an experimental downtown space in New York which has developed challenging new work since 1971. Tina Satter's spellbinding production transferred to Vineyard Theatre, running from Oct. 3 - Nov. 24, 2019. Due to overwhelming demand, the production then returned to Vineyard for a second engagement, from Dec. 20, 2019 - Jan. 19, 2020.
Emily Davis will reprise her critically-acclaimed performance as Reality Winner in Is This A Room Broadway performances. Davis’ performance was declared “one of the most trenchantly observed performances of the year” and “a portrait of almost forensic detail” by The New York Times, which praised Room as “a taut, extraordinary thriller.”
Is This A Room is a gripping and powerful new play that confronts our political moment with a shocking and disquieting relevancy.

Our Is This A Room Review
In a rare instance, an FBI transcript was declassified. Tina Satter, who conceived and directed Is This A Room, now playing at the Vineyard Theatre, immediately realized the value of this unique moment of history and transparency in any administration. Verbatim for 70 minutes the transcript of Reality Winner (Emily Davis) being arrested by the FBI is reenacted.
