About Baby

Julia Murney stars in Out of the Box Theatrics's site-specific production of Baby at Theatrelab. The 1983 musical, now with an updated book, sees three couples contend with the excitement and terror that comes with soon-to-be parenthood. Baby tickets are available on New York Theatre Guide now.

Baby is a musical that bounces back and forth between the stories of three couples, all expecting a child at various stages of their life. The first couple, Lizzie and Danny, are still in college and become pregnant unexpectedly. New tensions arise in their relationship when Danny insists that they get married, but Lizzie isn't sure. Meanwhile, long-married couple Arlene and Alan are in their 40s and are watching their last child go off to college. They get drunk on their anniversary trip one night, however, and Arlene finds herself pregnant again, and must decide whether she wants to keep the baby and start the cycle of raising a child all over again. Finally, Pam and Nicki are a lesbian couple in their 30s who are fervently trying for a baby with little success. First meeting in the same doctor's office where they all discover their pregnancies, Lizzie, Pam, and Arlene share their hopes and fears about parenthood together.

The original 1983 Broadway production of Baby received seven Tony Award nominations and has gone on to be performed in countries such as Australia and the Philippines. Out of the Box Theatrics first presented its production of Baby Off-Broadway in December 2019, which featured Pam and Nicki as a lesbian couple for the first time in Sybille Pearson's updated book. The couple were originally written as Pam and Nick, a straight couple. Due to popular demand, the revised production is back for a limited return engagement.

All Sunday performances of Baby will have an American Sign Language interpreter.

More information about Baby

Starring Julia Murney, three couples on a university campus deal with the painful, rewarding and agonizingly funny consequences of the universal experience of pregnancy and upcoming parenthood. There are the college students, barely at the beginning of their adult lives; the thirty-somethings, having trouble conceiving but determined to try; and the middle-aged parents, looking forward to seeing their last child graduate from college... when a night of unexpected passion lands them back where they started. Featuring an updated book to reflect today's society with the same beloved score.
