About Puccini's Madama Butterfly

Three extraordinary sopranos—Aleksandra Kurzak, Eleonora Buratto, and Asmik Grigorian (in her highly anticipated Met debut)—tackle the demanding role of Cio-Cio-San, the loyal geisha at the heart of Puccini’s devastating tragedy. Tenors Matthew Polenzani and Jonathan Tetelman co-star as the callous American naval officer Pinkerton, whose betrayal destroys her. Mezzo-sopranos Elizabeth DeShong and Eve Gigliotti share the role of the steadfast maid Suzuki, and baritone Davide Luciano and Lucas Meachem are the American consul Sharpless. Acclaimed maestro Xian Zhang makes her Met debut conducting Anthony Minghella’s vivid production.

World premiere: Teatro alla Scala, Milan, 1904. The title character of Madama Butterfly—a young Japanese geisha who clings to the belief that her arrangement with a visiting American naval officer is a loving and permanent marriage—is one of the defining roles in opera. The story triggers ideas about cultural and sexual imperialism for people far removed from the opera house, and film, Broadway, and popular culture in general have riffed endlessly on it. The lyric beauty of Puccini’s score, especially the music for the thoroughly believable lead role, has made Butterfly timeless.

Absorbing, Intense, Great staging, Great singing, Delightful

See it if you would enjoy having Puccini's great music take you away from all current day thoughts to a time and a place where a sad story unfolds.

Don’t see it if you do not appreciate the gentle story development of this opera's pace or do not appreciate the culture and dress of this setting.

Great staging, Great singing, Exquisite, Enchanting, Ambitious

See it if you love opera and want to see cool staging and hear beautiful voices. Love the puppetry.

Don’t see it if you aren't into the operatic voices. The set is not elaborate but there is gorgeous imagery.

Must see, Profound, Great staging, Great singing, Absorbing

See it if U are a neophyte testing out if opera is your thing. This powerful, tragic, beautiful piece will make you fall in love with this form of art

Don’t see it if you are unable to put this opera in perspective (it was written in 1898) and get offended by its content.

Pretty much what opera is for, Epic, Leave at intermission & it has a happy ending!, Staging is minimal but very effective, Great singing

See it if You like opera even the tiniest amount. This is as good as opera gets. The staging is minimalist but in a way that REALLY works.

Don’t see it if I can't imagine a good reason not to see this, honestly.
