About Here There Are Blueberries

Experience 2024 Pulitzer Prize for Drama finalist Here There Are Blueberries, the newest work from the acclaimed Tectonic Theater Project. A co-production with New York Theatre Workshop, the downtown venue celebrated for originating Rent, Hadestown, and more Tony Award-winning hits, Here There Are Blueberries tells the true story of a mysterious photo album and the amazing investigative process that followed to unearth its stories and origins. Get Here There Are Blueberries tickets on New York Theatre Guide.

A recipient of an Edgerton Foundation New Play Award, this timely production from Tectonic Theater Project, creators of the highly empathetic and widely produced The Laramie Project, tells the story of Rebecca Erbelding, a real-life Holocaust archivist at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. After an unnamed box of photographs arrived at her office, Rebecca and her team look to make sense of the mysterious and shocking World War II-era photos within.

Meanwhile, across the Atlantic Ocean, a German businessman discovers the posted photos online and recognizes his own grandfather in the images. His parallel journey with the photographs takes him into a community he never thought he’d be in: descendants of Nazis. An intimate and hyper-personal reckoning of one family’s history, Here There Are Blueberries breathes new life into old photographs, sharing what they reveal about our history and humanity. Created by Tony and Emmy Award nominee Moisés Kaufman and Emmy nominee Amanda Gronich, and directed by Kaufman, the play now comes to New York following a smash run at La Jolla Playhouse in 2022.

Reviewing the show’s world-premiere 2022 production in La Jolla, California, Charles McNulty of the Los Angeles Times wrote, “Moisés Kaufman conducts this impeccable production with symphonic subtlety.” Don’t miss out on this unique and spellbinding play — tickets to Here There Are Blueberries off Broadway will be available soon.

Searing docudrama showing the banality of evil, Dramatizes holocaust museum archivists dealing w, Album of photos of, Nazi auschwitz camp commandants/workers, Celebrating & at leisure in shadow of mass killing

See it if hauntng fotos brilantly displayed; turns painstakng archivl work in2 gripping detectv story; nails Germn amnesia re Nazis

Don’t see it if archival story only has so much drama; at timesTed-talk-ish, preachy/didactic; if u know Nazi era, learn little new

Thoughtful, Resonant, Poignant, Unembellished, Absorbing

See it if Tectonic keeps it fresh. Another landmark docudrama from the best. U love museums, libraries, archives. Emotions controlled but intense.

Don’t see it if prefer fiction only, or to “do your own research” by scanning 2 wikis, joining a subreddit, & foregoing contact with primary sources

Thought-provoking, Masterful, Intelligent, Absorbing

See it if A thoughtful examination of a WWII era photo album and the unsettling conclusions it can reveal about the humanity behind the atrocities

Don’t see it if A bit like a lecture with dramatic reenactments.
