About Prayer for the French Republic

Manhattan Theatre Club presents the Broadway premiere of Prayer for the French Republic, the newest play by Drama Desk Award and Outer Critics Circle Award winner Joshua Harmon, following its hit Off-Broadway world premiere at New York City Center. Get Prayer for the French Republic tickets on New York Theatre Guide.

Prayer for the French Republic is a play that spans five generations of a French Jewish family in Paris. The show begins at the height of World War II in 1944, when a couple worries for their missing family, desperate for information on their whereabouts. The uncertainty of their family’s safety makes the couple wonder whether they themselves are safe, and decades later, their great-grandchildren — and all the generations in between — find themselves asking the same question. The family has lived on the same land for generations, but as outside hatred gets passed down through the years, the family is never quite secure.

Joshua Harmon first experienced Off-Broadway success with his 2012 play Bad Jews at Roundabout Theatre Company, which earned Lucille Lortel and Outer Critics Circle Award nominations. His next Off-Broadway show at Roundabout, Significant Other, transferred to Broadway in 2015, and he premiered one more show with the company in 2018: Skintight, starring Idina Menzel. In between, Lincoln Center Theater produced his play Admissions in 2018, which won Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Outstanding New Off-Broadway play and Best Play, respectively.

Now, he teams up with David Cromer — who won a Tony Award for directing The Band’s Visit on Broadway — for Prayer for the French Republic on Broadway. The Off-Broadway premiere, which Cromer also directed, marked Harmon’s debut with Manhattan Theatre Club.

Relevant, Intelligent, Great acting, Great staging, Great writing

See it if you like plays that reflect historic and current conditions faced by people - this one gives you lots to think about. Two u/s were excellent

Don’t see it if you do not like long, 3 acts/2 intermissions, talky plays about serious subjects - there is some humor, but also lots of family disagreement
