Until her tragic and untimely death on August 31, 1997, Diana, Princess of Wales, was the most famous woman on the planet and attracted media attention like no other. Her struggles within the British royal family and her fraught marriage to Charles, the Prince of Wales, have been well-documented... but never on the Broadway stage. That is, until now.
The new musical Diana explores the rocky love triangle between the Prince and Princess of Wales and Charles' first love, Camilla Parker Bowles. The tuner also examines her tricky relationship with both the United Kingdom's monarch (and her mother-in-law), Queen Elizabeth II, and the country's boulevard press, and the way in which she would ultimately become 'The People's Princess.'
The writers behind Diana, Joe DiPietro and Bon Jovi member David Bryan, enjoyed phenomenal success with their first Broadway venture. The duo wrote the book, music and lyrics for the smash hit musical Memphis, which went on to win the 2010 Tony Awards for 'Best Musical,' 'Best Book of a Musical,' 'Best Original Score Written for the Theatre,' and 'Best Orchestrations.' Can their next Broadway musical follow in its predecessor's footsteps and win the hearts of the people, just as Diana herself did? Time will tell...
Diana staged its world premiere production with a sold-out, extended engagement at La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego from February through April 2019. Reprising their respective roles for the original company of the Broadway transfer are Jeanna de Waal as the titular Diana, Roe Hartrampf as Prince Charles, Erin Davie as Camilla Parker Bowles, and two-time Tony Award-winner Judy Kaye as Queen Elizabeth II.
