'Take Me Out' to return to Broadway with Jesse Williams and Jesse Tyler Ferguson

The Tony-winning revival will play the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre.

The team is reuniting for another season! Take Me Out, which won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play in 2022, will return to Broadway for a limited engagement with two of its original stars. The show begins performances at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on October 27.

Grey's Anatomy star Jesse Williams will reprise his Broadway-debut role, which earned him a Tony nomination. He plays Darren Lemming, a Major League Baseball player on the fictional New York Empires, who makes waves in the locker room and beyond by coming out as gay.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson, best known for Modern Family, will reprise his 2022 Tony-winning role as Mason Marzac, Darren's baseball-indifferent business manager who suddenly falls madly in love with the sport. Mason provides support to Darren as he faces homophobia from his teammates and the public, and starts to fall out of love with baseball at his career peak. A New York Theatre Guide review of Take Me Out praises Ferguson for giving "one of his best performances to date."

This Take Me Out revival was first mounted by Second Stage Theater at the Hayes Theater. The limited run, whose planned February-May run was extended to mid-June, received widespread acclaim and two Tony wins out of four nominations. The New York Theatre Guide review reads, "We still have a long way to go in terms of our perception of masculinity — or what it even means to be male — and Take Me Out makes us aware of this, but uses a curve ball to do so."

Alongside Williams and Ferguson in that production were Suits star Patrick J. Adams as Kippy Sunderstrom, Darren's best friend on the team; and Tony nominee Michael Oberholtzer as Shane Mungitt, the Empires' new, bigoted teammate. Additional casting for the encore engagement of Take Me Out has yet to be announced.

Richard Greenberg's play premiered on Broadway in 2002, becoming a Pulitzer Prize finalist and winning the Tony Award for Best Play a year later. Denis O'Hare won a Tony Award for his portrayal of Mason Marzac, and Joe Mantello won for Best Director of a Play.

Scott Ellis directed Second Stage's Take Me Out revival and will also helm the encore engagement this fall. The creative team also includes scenic designer David Rockwell, costume designer Linda Cho, lighting designer Kenneth Posner, and sound designer Bray Poor.
