Samuel L. Jackson to star in ‘The Piano Lesson’ in 2022

Danielle Brooks and John David Washington will also star in the Broadway revival.

August Wilson's The Piano Lesson will be revived on Broadway with a star-studded cast in 2022, it has been announced. The Piano Lesson is part of Wilson's Pittsburgh Cycle, which earned Wilson his second Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Set in Pittsburgh during the aftermath of the Great Depression, a family argue about what to do with their piano. It's an heirloom passed down through the generations, but with the family needing to survive, debate ensues about keeping the musical instrument. Should they sell the piano to buy the land, or keep it as a treasured artefact?

In a tweet from Daily Mail entertainment reporter Baz Bamigboye, Samuel L. Jackson will star in The Piano Lesson, who originally made his Broadway debut in the original 1990 production. Best known for playing Nick Fury in the Marvel films, he played Martin Luther King in The Mountaintop in 2012.

John David Washington will also star, recently appearing in films including Tenet and BlacKkKlansman. Danielle Brooks joins the cast too, whose Broadway credits include a Tony Award-nominated performance as Sofia in The Color Purple.

LaTanya Richardson Jackson will make her Broadway directorial debut with The Piano Lesson. Previously, she's starred in To Kill a Mockingbird at the Shubert Theatre, as well as Joe Turner's Come and Gone and A Raisin in the Sun.

The Piano Lesson was first performed on Broadway in 1990 at the Walter Kerr Theatre, nominated for five Tony Awards. In 2013, an off-Broadway production ran at Signature Theater, with Tulis McCall saying: "The Piano Lesson is many lessons all packed into one collection of people, who, like all of us, possess magic and secrets, shining gifts and shameful memories, extraordinary moments and daily deeds. They are raw and ragged. They are wistful and practical. They scratch at the ties that bind them, and provide balm when the ties chaff to the point of drawing blood."

On March 10, Netflix confirmed that The Piano Lesson will be adapted on screen. Details on The Piano Lesson Netflix premiere date is to be announced.
