Saint Joan, starring Condola Rashad, begins performances on Broadway

Manhattan Theatre Club's Broadway revival of Bernard Shaw's Saint Joan begins previews at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre tonight.

Manhattan Theatre Club's new Broadway revival of Saint Joan, written by Nobel Prize and Academy Award winner George Bernard Show and directed by Tony Award winner Daniel Sullivan, begins previews at Broadway's Samuel J. Friedman Theatre tonight, ahead of an official opening on April 25 and a limited engagement through to June 10, 2018.

Synopsis: "Set in 15th century France, Saint Joan follows a country girl whose mysterious visions propel her into elite circles. When the nation's rulers become threatened by her popularity and influence, they unite to bring her down and she finds herself on trial for her life. This timeless and powerful play dramatizes the limits of an individual in a society dominated by overwhelming political and religious forces."

Led by three-time Tony Award nominee Condola Rashad, the cast of Saint Joan also includes "Smash" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" alum Jack Davenport, making his Broadway debut as Warwick, Tony Award-winning director Walter Bobbie (as Cauchon), returning to Broadway in an acting role for the first time in 26 years, Adam Chanler-Berat (as Dauphin), Tony Award winner John Glover (as Archbishop/Gentleman), Patrick Page (as Inquisitor/Baudricourt), and Tony Award nominee Daniel Sunjata (as Dunois), as well as Maurice Jones (as Courcelles, Page to Dunois), Russell G. Jones (as Tremouille, Page to Warwick), Max Gordon Moore (as Bluebeard, Ladvenu), Matthew Saldivar (as D'Estivet, Polly), Robert Stanton (as Chaplain, English Soldier, Steward to Baudricourt), and Lou Sumrall (as La Hire, Executioner).

The creative team behind Saint Joan features original music by Bill Frisell, scenic design by Scott Pask, costume design by Jane Greenwood, lighting design by Justin Townsend, sound design by Obadiah Eaves, projection design by Christopher Ash, hair & wig design by Tom Watson, make-up design by Tommy Kurzman, and dialect coaching by Deborah Hecht.

Saint Joan originally premiered on Broadway in December 1923. The MTC production will mark the play's eighth Broadway revival, having last been performed on the Great White Way at the Lyceum Theatre in 1993.

Condola Rashad was last seen on Broadway in Lucas Hnath's A Doll's House, Part 2, for which she earned a Tony nomination for her performance as Emmy. She also earned Tony nominations in 2013 for The Trip to Bountiful and in 2012 for Stick Fly (her Broadway debut). She also played Juliet in the 2013 Broadway revival of Romeo and Juliet, alongside Orlando Bloom. In 2009 she also received a Theatre World Award for her off-Broadway debut in the Manhattan Theatre Club production of Ruined by Lynn Nottage. Her screen credits include "Money Monster," "Steel Magnolias," "Sex and the City 2," "Smash," and her current TV role as Kate Sacker on "Billions".

Manhattan Theatre Club's 2017-2018 season also includes Anthony Giardina's Dan Cody's Yacht at New York City Center's Stage I and Donja R. Love's Sugar in the Wounds at New York City Center's Studio at Stage II.
