'Into the Woods' extends to January on Broadway
The musical plays the St. James Theatre.
There's even more time to go into the woods! The critically acclaimed revival of Into the Woods has extended a second time, with performances now running through January 8, 2023 at the St. James Theatre.
Director Lear deBessonet's production of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's musical was first staged in May as part of the New York City Center Encores! series for rarely revived musicals. The show initially transferred to Broadway for an eight-week limited engagement through August 21 before extending to October 16, and now to January.
In Into the Woods, a Baker and his Wife are cursed to be childless, so they venture into the woods to reverse the spell. On their journey, they meet other fairytale characters on their own quests — Cinderella, Little Red Ridinghood, and more — and they all learn that the path to happily ever after isn't always so smooth. The show premiered in 1987 and won three Tony Awards, including Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical.
A five-star New York Theatre Guide review of Into the Woods reads, "It’s Broadway’s giant summer blockbuster... As characters get mashed together and 'happily ever afters' are replaced by reality checks, the scope of the show expands. What emerges is a funny, insightful, and thrilling story about life and death and all that’s waiting along the way."
Sara Bareilles and Brian d'Arcy James initially led the Broadway run. As of yesterday, the Into the Woods Broadway cast is led by Tony Award winner Stephanie J. Block and her husband Sebastian Arcelus as the Baker's Wife and the Baker, respectively; Krysta Rodriguez as Cinderella; Tony winner Patina Miller and Montego Glover sharing the role of the Witch.
