‘Come From Away’ filmed version of Broadway musical to be released
The live-filmed version has slated a September 2021 release.
UPDATE: According to film shoot signs outside the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, Come From Away is being filmed on Broadway from 27 Apr - 2 May 2021.
Although Broadway audiences can’t see Come From Away, there’ll be another way for theatergoers to say "Welcome to the Rock". According to Variety, a live-filmed version of Come From Away is currently in the works, to be released this year.
Produced by Entertainment One, the upcoming Come From Away film will mark the first time audiences can watch the full production away from the stage. The filmed version will be recorded at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre this May to be released in September, marking the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the Twin Towers.
Set in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, Come From Away tells of 7,000 stranded air crew and passengers who were forced to divert to Newfoundland as part of Operation Yellow Ribbon. In doing so, the locals and travelers formed an international community, changing their lives forever.
Come From Away is written by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, after visiting Gander on the 10th anniversary of 9/11. After regional try-outs, Come From Away began performances at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on February 18, 2017 ahead of an opening night on March 12, 2017. In a review for New York Theatre Guide, Tulis McCall said: “No one will leave untouched by this show. The spirit that is on that stage sweeps past the footlights and scoops everyone in the audience up into its arms.”
Although casting for the filmed version is to be announced, members of the Broadway cast are expected to reprise their roles. The original Broadway cast included Chad Kimball, Jenn Collella, Joel Hatch, Rodney Hicks, Caesar Samayoa, Kendra Kassebaum, Petrina Bromley, Geno Carr, Lee MacDougall, Q. Smith, Sharon Wheatley and Astrid Van Wieren. The film will also feature musical staging by two time Tony Award-nominee Kelly Devine, along with music supervision by Ian Eisendrath.
As well as this filmed version, a feature film adaptation of Come From Away is currently in early planning stages. Sankoff and Hein will write the screenplay, with direction by Christopher Ashley.
