André De Shields to depart 'Hadestown' in May
The Tony winner will play his final performance May 29.
All we've ever known is André De Shields as Hermes in Hadestown. But now, the Tony Award-winning original cast member is set to depart the show, playing his final performance on May 29.
De Shields has played the role of Hermes since the 2018 London premiere of Hadestown, and he reprised that role for the show's Broadway debut. For his performance in New York, he won the Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, and Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical following much critical acclaim.
New casting for the role of Hermes has yet to be announced.
Anaïs Mitchell's Hadestown, the 2019 Tony winner for Best Musical, is a contemporary retelling of Greek mythology, centered on the lovers Orpheus and Eurydice. When Eurydice gets trapped in Hades's underworld, here reimagined as a bleak industrial factory, Orpheus embarks on a dangerous journey to rescue her with the guidance of Hermes and the Fates. The show has played the Walter Kerr Theatre since 2019.
