Rock music takes the stage in three Broadway shows this spring

Songs by rock bands The Who and Huey Lewis and The News appear in high-energy musicals alongside a new play with music inspired by the 1970s rock scene.

Three new cast members have entered the cottage! Complete principal casting has been announced for [*The Cottage*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/27834-the-cottage-tickets) on Broadway. This new comedy play by Sandy Rustin begins performances on July 7.

Newly announced cast members include Alex Moffat, Nehal Joshi, and Dana Steingold. Joshi and Steingold are theatre veterans; Joshi has appeared in various shows including *The Phantom of the Opera* and *Les Miserables*, and Steingold just wrapped a run in *Beetlejuice* on Broadway.

Moffat, now making his Broadway debut, is known for his breakout performances on *Saturday Night Live*, impersonating figures like Joe Biden and Mark Zuckerberg and appearing regularly in the Weekend Update sketch.

The trio joins the previously announced previously announced Eric McCormack (Emmy Award winner for *Will & Grace*), Laura Bell Bundy (Tony nominee for *Legally Blonde*), and Lilli Cooper (Tony nominee for *Tootsie*).

Additionally, the creative team includes set designer Paul Tate dePoo III, costume designer Sydney Maresca, lighting designer Jiyoun “Jiji” Chang, and sound designer Justin Ellington.

Jason Alexander makes his Broadway directorial debut with *The Cottage*, a new play starring Eric McCormack, Laura Bell Bundy, and Lilli Cooper. Check back for information on *The Cottage* tickets on New York Theatre Guide.

*The Cottage* is a play about a married woman having an extramarital affair with a married man. She decides to come clean to her husband and her lover's wife at the same time. More revelations ensue from there, bringing about plenty of humor — along with potentially deadly twists.

This farce, by Broadway-debut playwright Sandy Rustin (also known for writing the 2022 stage adaptation of *Clue*), is inspired by the works of celebrated writer Noël Coward. Coward's comedies often take place among the high society of early 20th-century England he experienced firsthand. Likewise, Rustin's comedy is set in the English countryside in 1923.

Leading the cast of *The Cottage* in New York is a trio of veteran stage and screen talent. Returning to Broadway for the first time since 2012 is Eric McCormack, who's best known for his Emmy Award-winning role as Will Truman on *Will & Grace*. Also making a grand return to Broadway is Tony nominee Laura Bell Bundy, who last starred as Elle Woods in *Legally Blonde: The Musical* from 2007-2008.

Rounding out the trio is Lilli Cooper, who performed in a different Broadway farce, Selina Fillinger's *POTUS*, last summer. She's also a Tony nominee for the *Tootsie* musical and has performed in *Spring Awakening*, *Wicked*, and *SpongeBob SquarePants*.

## Who is Jason Alexander?

Jason Alexander is an actor and director best known for starring as George Costanza on *Seinfeld*. In his 40-plus-year entertainment career, Alexander has also become known for playing Phillip Stuckey in *Pretty Woman*, Hugo in *The Hunchback of Notre Dame*, and Asher Friedman on *The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel*. He is also an Emmy and Tony Award winner, having appeared in numerous other screen projects and six Broadway shows.

Alexander has also directed films and episodes of TV shows including *Criminal Minds* and *Young Sheldon*. He makes his Broadway directorial debut with *The Cottage*.

*Jason Alexander* has directed for the screen and stage before, but he makes his Broadway directorial debut with *The Cottage*. He's performed in six Broadway shows, winning a Tony for *Jerome Robbins' Broadway* in 1989, but he's best known as Jerry's best friend George Costanza on the classic sitcom *Seinfeld*.

In *The Cottage*, he directs a cast of fellow comedy aces with Emmy and Tony honors to their name. You likely know Eric McCormack best as Will Truman on *Will & Grace*, for which he won an Emmy and earned several award nominations, and Alex Moffat for his stellar impression of President Joe Biden and more on *SNL*. Laura Bell Bundy and Lilli Cooper are both Tony nominees: Bundy was nominated for playing Elle Woods in *Legally Blonde* and Cooper for Julie Nichols in *Tootsie*. 
## What to Watch For

- Jason Alexander made his Broadway debut in Stephen Sondheim's *Merrily We Roll Along* in 1981. That musical will have its first Broadway revival in fall 2023, just as *The Cottage* wraps up.
- *The Cottage* is inspired by the plays of Noël Coward, who wrote comedies of manners set in early 20th-century England.
- Two actors in *The Cottage* return to Broadway after long hiatuses. McCormack last appeared in *The Best Man* in 2012, and Bundy in *Legally Blonde* in 2007.
- Rustin is no stranger to period comedies. She adapted Jonathan Lynn’s screenplay for *Clue*, the 1950s-set comedy whodunnit, into a 2022 play. American Theatre magazine recognized Rustin’s adaptation of *Clue* as one of the most produced shows of the 2022-23 season.
- Rustin also wrote the book for a new musical adaptation of the hit Julia Roberts film *Mystic Pizza*.

[*The Cottage*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/27834-the-cottage-tickets) is an airy — and gassy — comedy about cheating. Sandy Rustin wrote the play with a single-minded mission — to keep you in stitches — and it largely hits the mark. 

Now on Broadway a decade after it premiered in Queens, the play’s laughs and momentum do dip on occasion. Nonetheless, the cast consistently manages to make infidelity entertaining. Even when someone pulls a gun.

It’s 1923 in an English country house. Don’t let the posh locale fool you, nor that Noël Coward has been cited as an inspiration for this rom-com: Nobody’s here to mind their upper-crust manners. The onstage curtain at the [Hayes Theater](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/hayes-theater) teases this. At first glance, you see a garden of colorful wildflowers outside the house. Soon, your eye catches squirrels boinking here and deer doing it there. It mirrors what goes on inside.

Since 1917, Sylvia ([Laura Bell Bundy](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/interviews/laura-bell-bundy-returns-to-broadway-after-15-years-in-the-cottage)) and Beau (*Will & Grace*'s Eric McCormack), who are married to other people, have carried on a *Same Time, Next Year*-style annual one-night tryst at his widowed mother’s country home decorated with animal heads. The sly implications of that decor eventually become clear. It’s always been a place about notching trophies.

It’s the morning after “passionate, wildly erotic sex.” Beau’s showering. Sylvia wears lingerie and is lit by afterglow. Per usual, he calls her Tulip, an endearment that makes her weak in the knees. But something’s different. Sylvia’s got a seven-year itch. She wants Beau to herself full-time. She has sent a telegram to her husband, Clarke (Alex Moffat, of *Saturday Night Live*), and Beau’s wife, Marjorie (Lilli Cooper), to tell them what’s going on.

In short order, they come to the love shack. The place gets even more crowded with the arrival of Deirdre (Dana Steingold) and her ex-husband Richard (Nehal Joshi). To reveal more about their interconnections and plot twists would be a killjoy. Suffice it to say there's a daisy chain of dalliances – and one link is way too close for comfort. 

Of course, that’s the point. For laughs' sake, the situation is over-the-top. Rustin raids the comedy playbook for the pure sake of humor. She includes an extended fart joke, bad puns, an ongoing gag about cigarettes and booze popping up in unexpected places, a potential murder plot (hence the gun), and a truly dopey dime-store disguise. 

“You stuck a mustache on a mustache?” asks a gobsmacked Sylvia. It’s absurd and funny, and it gets to the core of this layer cake of a comedy. Can’t have too much of a good thing. 

Jason Alexander, a *Seinfeld* alum who won a Tony for *Jerome Robbins’ Broadway*, impresses in his Broadway directing debut. He’s [assembled an ace ensemble](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/stars-of-will-and-grace-snl-legally-blonde-move-into-the-cottage-on-broadway), keeps the pace reasonably revved, and wrapped it up in a good-looking production. One quibble – he overplays his hand with grandly silly music and light cues as characters make entrances.

McCormack hams it up expertly as the haughty Beau. Cooper slow-burns until Marjorie gets a moment to let it all rip. Broadway newcomer Moffat steps up as the klutzy charmer. Best of the bunch is Bundy, who makes every comedic line and pose gleefully giggle-inducing. 

In the end, *The Cottage* is about Sylvia opening her eyes to her relationships with men. But the moment that sticks out is the hilarious sight of Sylvia plugging her nose with an old-timey phone receiver. Moments like that make *The Cottage* a Broadway funhouse.

The Hayes Theater officially opened as The Little Theatre on March 12, 1912. The building was designed by Harry Creighton Ingalls and built by Winthrop Ames, opening with John Galsworthy's play *The Pigeon*.

During the 1920s, the theatre was redesigned by Herbert J. Krapp to increase the capacity from 300 to 590. The New York Times purchased the building in 1931, converting it to a conference hall under the name of New York Times Hall.

In 1979, Martin Markinson and Donald Tick bought the theatre and renamed it in 1983 to the Helen Hayes Theatre to honor the actress. A previous theatre bearing her name was demolished in 1982 to make way for the Marriott Marquis Hotel.

On April 18, 2015, it was officially announced that Second Stage Theater had purchased the property. It was later revealed that the venue would be renamed the Hayes Theater, and it opened in spring 2018. The Hayes Theater is the smallest Broadway theatre, now with 597 seats.

The Hayes Theater, located on 44th Street between Eighth Avenue and Broadway, is closest to the 42nd Street - Port Authority subway stop on the A, C, and E lines. Additionally, the nearest bus stops are 8th Ave/W 46th St. on the M20 and M104 lines; 7th Ave/W. 44th St. on the M104 line; and 8th Ave/W 43rd St. on the M20, M104, and M34A-SBS lines.
