St. Ann’s Warehouse to reopen with ‘Only an Octave Apart’ in September
Justin Vivian Bond and Anthony Roth Costanzo's operatic take will reopen the New York venue.
St. Ann's Warehouse will return to full-capacity performances this September, with the operatic production Only an Octave Apart. Justin Vivian Bond and Anthony Roth Costanzo star in their work, with performances at St. Ann's Warehouse from September 21 - October 3.
From Purcell's "Dido's Lament" to Dido's "White Flag", Only an Octave Apart will showcase the extreme, divergent music from over four centuries. Expressing their queer identities, Bond and Costanzo will celebrate a variety of styles, poking fun at gendered history and music.
Speaking about his work, Costanzo said: "Opera may now be perceived as normative and elitist, but it has a wild lineage as both an interdisciplinary and popular, zeitgeist-driving form—not to mention one whose popularity was rooted in the sex-symbol status of castrated men.
What I have always tried to do, and what I think this show can excel at, is to drop some breadcrumbs for people who are a gateway audience... When you hear them, they can be a kind of reflection of your identity and the multitudes it includes."
Zack Wintour directs, with scenic design by Carlos Soto, lighting design by John Torres and sound design by David Schnirman.
Only an Octave Apart is at St. Ann's Warehouse from September 21 - October 3.
