A new musical adaptation of Picnic at Hanging Rock will debut off Broadway this fall, playing at the Greenwich House Theater from December 16 to January 17 only. Opening night is December 18.
Picnic at Hanging Rock: The Musical is adapted from Joan Lindsay's 1967 novel, which achieved global recognition with Peter Weir's 1975 film version that came to define the Australian New Wave of cinema. On Valentine’s Day in 1900, a group of schoolgirls go on a picnic to Hanging Rock — only for three of them to vanish, rocking the local community.
The musical features a book and lyrics by Hilary Bell and music and arrangements by Greta Gertler Gold. Portia Krieger directs, and Mayte Natalio choreographs.
“Peter Weir’s stunning film grabbed my imagination as a young person and has always haunted me,” said Gold in a statement. “The chance for Hilary Bell, Portia Krieger, and me to bring it to life as a musical featuring so many diverse female voices and opening the story up to a crucial First Nations Australian perspective, has been a dream come true.”
The Picnic at Hanging Rock: The Musical cast is led by Tatianna Córdoba (Real Women Have Curves) and Erin Davie (Grey Gardens) alongside Sarah Ellis, Carly Rose Gendell, Gillian Han, Bradley Lewis, Kate Louissant, Marina Pires, Maddie Robert, Brandon Keith Rogers, Reese Sebastian Diaz, Lizzy Tucker, Kaye Tuckerman, Sarah Walsh, and Jordan White.
The show also features features scenic design by Daniel Zimmerman, costume design by Ásta Bennie Hostetter, lighting design by Barbara Samuels, sound design by Nick Kourtides, music direction and conducting by Anessa Marie Scolpini, and orchestrations by Greta Gertler Gold, Adam Gold, and Rob Jost.
