Paradise Square takes place in the Five Points neighborhood of Manhattan in 1863. Irish immigrants and free Blacks once lived together in harmony and drank, debated, and danced at the titular tavern. But when the 1863 draft arrives and excludes Black people from serving, the tavern becomes a site for the groups to clash over differing ideas of what America should be.

The 10-time Tony-nominated musical began performances at the Barrymore Theatre on March 15. Joaquina Kalukango won a Tony for Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical. Find out more about Paradise Square on Broadway
