'Pal Joey' revival set for the 2022-23 Broadway season

The new production will feature a revised book by Richard LaGravenese and additional music from Rodgers and Hart.

Sound the happy hunting horn! A revival of the Rodgers and Hart musical Pal Joey will go up in Broadway's 2022-23 season, with performance dates to be confirmed. Tony Goldwyn and Savion Glover will co-direct the new production; Glover will also choreograph.

The classic musical centers on Joey Evans, a performer at a 1930s Chicago nightclub with ambitions of running his own venue — and a penchant for lying to do it. It first premiered on Broadway in 1940 and was last revived in 2008. While the basic plot is still in place, Pal Joey has been revised for the upcoming revival, with a new book by Richard LaGravenese to replace John O'Hara's original. The action is now set in the 1940s in a club specifically on Chicago's South Side, and the character of Linda, originally written as a stenographer, is now an aspiring singer.

Some of Rodgers and Hart's famous songs not originally included in the Pal Joey script have also been added for the upcoming production, including "Where or When," "The Lady is a Tramp," "It Never Entered My Mind," "My Heart Stood Still," "Falling in Love With Love," and "There's A Small Hotel."

Casting for Pal Joey will be announced at a later date. The creative team includes set designer Derek McLane, costume designer Emilio Sosa, lighting designer Natasha Katz, and orchestrator, arranger, and music supervisor Daryl Waters.
