'Once Upon a Mattress' completes principal Broadway cast

Four new actors and two returning cast members from the show's Off-Broadway run earlier this year join the previously announced Sutton Foster and Michael Urie.

We have a royal proclamation! Once Upon a Mattress has completed its main Broadway cast ahead of its first performance at the Hudson Theatre later this month. The limited-run musical will play from July 31 to November 30, and opening night is August 12.

Joining previously announced stars Sutton Foster as Princess Winnifred and Michael Urie as Prince Dauntless are two-time Tony Award nominee Brooks Ashmanskas (The Prom) as The Wizard, Tony nominee Daniel Breaker (Passing Strange) as The Jester, Tony nominee Will Chase (Mystery of Edwin Drood) as Sir Harry, Nikki Renée Daniels (Company) as Lady Larken, David Patrick Kelly (An Enemy of the People) as King Sextimus, Ana Gasteyer (Saturday Night Live) as Queen Aggravain, and Kara Lindsay (Newsies) as the standby for Winnifred.

The ensemble includes Daniel Beeman, Wendi Bergamini, Cicily Daniels, Taylor Marie Daniel, Ben Davis, Sheldon Henry, Oyoyo Joi, Amanda Lamotte, Sarah Michele Lindsey, Michael Olaribigbe, Adam Roberts, Jeffrey Schecter, Darius Wright, and Richard Riaz Yoder.

Foster, Urie, Daniels, and Kelly reprise their roles from Once Upon a Mattress's limited Off-Broadway run at New York City Center earlier this year. The others have newly joined for the Broadway run.

The 1959 musical Once Upon a Mattress is a comedic retelling of The Princess and the Pea, in which Winnifred must prove her worthiness to Aggravain in order to marry her son, Dauntless. This new production is directed by Lear deBessonet and newly adapted by Amy Sherman-Palladino (Gilmore Girls, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) from the original book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller, and Marshall Barer. Music is by Mary Rodgers, with lyrics by Barer.

As previously announced, Once Upon a Mattress features choreography by Lorin Latarro, music supervision by Mary-Mitchell Campbell, music direction by Annbritt duChateau, set design by David Zinn, costume design by Andrea Hood, lighting design by Justin Townsend, sound design by Kai Harada, orchestrations by Bruce Coughlin, and hair and wig design by J. Jared Janas.
