One of the most celebrated musicals of all time, Gypsy follows Momma Rose, the ultimate "stage mother" who goes to obsessive lengths to make her daughters into stars no matter what. In the role of Rose is Audra McDonald, the most Tony Award-winning Broadway performer of all time with six competitive honors.
"McDonald’s take on Momma Rose is all her own from her very first line to her triumphant final song," New York Theatre Guide's Gypsy review reads. "She oozes with all of Rose’s insecurities but loves so fiercely and protectively. McDonald throws her entire being into [the song] “Rose’s Turn,” building and building until you begin to marvel that you are lucky enough to witness such a performance."
The Gypsy cast also features Tony Award winner Danny Burstein as Herbie, Joy Woods as Louise, Jordan Tyson as June, Lesli Margherita as Tessie Tura, Lili Thomas as Mazeppa, Mylinda Hull as Electra/Miss Cratchitt, Jacob Ming-Trent as Uncle Jocko, Summer Rae Daney and Kyleigh Denae Vickers as Baby Louise, Marley Lianne Gomes and Jade Smith as Baby June, and Kevin Csolak as Tulsa.
Gypsy is written by Arthur Laurents (book), Jule Styne (music), and Stephen Sondheim (lyrics) and premiered on Broadway in 1959. This revival, directed by Tony winner George C. Wolfe and choreographed by four-time nominee Camille A. Brown, is the first production to reopen the newly renovated Majestic Theatre since the closure of The Phantom of the Opera after 35 years.
