Danny Burstein to star in ‘Gypsy’ on Broadway opposite Audra McDonald
The Tony Award-winning actor will join director George C. Wolfe's revival of the classic showbiz musical at Broadway's Majestic Theatre beginning in November.
Extra, extra! Tony Award winner Danny Burstein has joined the cast of Gypsy on Broadway, joining the previously announced Tony winner Audra McDonald. Performances begin at the Majestic Theatre on November 21 ahead of a December 19 opening.
Burstein is best known for his Tony-winning performance as Harold Zidler in the original Broadway cast of Moulin Rouge! The Musical. He has received an additional six nominations, and his other Broadway roles include Doolittle in My Fair Lady, Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof, and Herr Schultz in Cabaret.
In Gypsy, Burstein will star as Herbie opposite McDonald as Momma Rose. Additional casting has yet to be announced.
Inspired by the memoirs of burlesque performer Gypsy Rose Lee, Gypsy follows Rose, a mother who will do anything to make her daughters into stars. The show features a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Jule Styne, and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.
This revival will be directed by Tony winner George C. Wolfe and choreographed by Tony nominee Camille A. Brown. Gypsy will also feature scenic design by Santo Loquasto, costume design by Toni-Leslie James, lighting design by Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer, sound design by Scott Lehrer, hair and wig design by Mia Neal, and makeup design by Michael Clifton.
