*The Coast Starlight* is named for the long-distance train that runs between Seattle and Los Angeles. A man riding that train is hiding a secret that could get him in trouble, and on his thousand-mile trip, his fellow passengers help him figure out what to do.

The cast includes Mia Barron, Camila Canó-Flaviá, Rhys Coiro, Will Harrison, Jon Norman Schneider, and Michelle Wilson. The creative team includes set designer Arnulfo Maldonado, costume designer Ásta Bennie Hostetter, lighting designer Lap Chi Chu, composer and sound designer Daniel Kluger, and projection designer 59 Productions.

The show marks playwright Keith Bunin's Lincoln Center Theater debut. Three of his works previously premiered at another Off-Broadway theatre, Playwrights Horizons: *The Busy World is Hushed*, *The Credeaux Canvas*, and *The World Over*.

Tyne Rafaeli directs *The Coast Starlight* in New York after directing its premiere at La Jolla Playhouse. At LCT, she directed *Epiphany* in summer 2022; elsewhere, she directed Pulitzer Prize finalist *Selling Kabul* and *Usual Girls*.

*The Coast Starlight* play takes place during a thousand-mile train ride along the West Coast. Among the passengers is a man harboring a major secret — if it gets out, he's in trouble. He has until the end of the trip to figure out how to deal with it with the help of his fellow riders, all of whom have their own choices to wrestle with, too.

Fittingly for a show that takes place on the West Coast, *The Coast Starlight* at California's La Jolla Playhouse in 2019. *The Coast Starlight* in New York features three cast members from the original production: Mia Barron, Camila Canó-Flaviá, and Rhys Coiro.

Original director Tyne Rafaeli also returns for *The Coast Starlight* off Broadway. She previously directed Brian Watkins's *Epiphany* and Sylvia Khoury's *Power Strip* at LCT, as well as the 2022 Pulitzer Prize finalist *Selling Kabul*, also by Khoury, at Playwrights Horizons.

Bunin has had four previous plays off Broadway: *The Credeaux Canvas*, *The Busy World is Hushed*, *The World Over*, and *10 Million Miles*. The first three went up with Playwrights Horizons; the fourth, with Atlantic Theater Company. Bunin now makes his LCT debut with *The Coast Starlight*.

Thirty-five hours. One ride along the West Coast. And one major decision. A passenger traveling on the title train line is dealing with a life-altering secret, and his fellow passengers help him decide what he must do. The passenger next to you on a long train ride could be the bane of your existence — or they could be your soulmate. When that trip is 36 hours long, it’s impossible not to imagine both. Such is the conceit of Keith Bunin’s [*The Coast Starlight*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/27332-the-coast-starlight-tickets), now playing at [Lincoln Center Theater](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/lincoln-center-mitzi-e-newhouse-theater).

The play begins with Jane (Camila Canó-Flaviá) and T.J. (Will Harrison) confessing, or rehearsing, what they would have told each other on the title train if either had gathered the courage to speak. Though they don't know it, they were both taken with each other almost instantly, as if drawn together by some external force of fate (or narrative convenience).

Jane is a cartoonist en route to Seattle to visit, and probably break up with, her long-distance boyfriend. T.J., a Navy combat medic, was set to ship out from San Diego to Afghanistan the next morning but instead bought a train ticket with a stolen credit card. Noah (Rhys Coiro), a world-weary veteran, interrupts the would-be lovers with his own reverie of what he might have said to the shaken T.J.

T.J.’s conflict could be engaging should the play’s proverbial train ever leave the station, and Coiro lends a hard-edged sense of humor to Noah that endears him to the audience. However, *The Coast Starlight* chugs along at a snail’s pace. Actors shout monotonous recollections and delight in their half-hearted observations on the human condition along the entire Pacific Coast, leaving little unexpressed and more to be desired.

Fortunately, Liz (Mia Barron) soon bursts onto the train, reeling from a breakup at a wellness retreat that may have almost been the scene of her murder. She screeches the story of her failed relationship into her phone as the other passengers worry she doesn’t realize they're there. Barron knows how to work the audience for laughs in between moments of tension, and her performance delights and entertains the rest of the journey. 

*The Coast Starlight*’s thesis — that strangers on a train could change each other’s lives, and that you never really know what someone else is going through — wants to be profound, but it lands somewhere a bit juvenile. Life lessons such as these feel obvious, and the characters’s exchanges on empathy don't feel like natural dialogue.

It doesn’t help that Jane has one of the biggest parts but the lowest stakes of the passengers. Her love life feels out of place with discussions of Noah’s transience or Anna (Michelle Wilson, whose performance exudes love) identifying her deceased brother’s body.

Lighting by Lap Chi Chu expertly evokes sunlight peeking through window slats, but other scenic elements do nothing to accelerate or enhance the story; the turntable stage spins so often and so much at a time as to render its potential meaning null. Director Tyne Rafaeli can pull much more resonant stage images from a text, but here, her touch feels missing.

The play works best when it relies less on the literal thoughts of the passengers and leans into the purgatorial nature of the train: T.J. is trapped in a space that can only function as liminal, set to leave a career meant to be temporary as well. When his life plays out before his eyes, when his future contains all the possibilities and disappointments a train ride can hold — that is when the play soars. It too is brief a moment, stuck between stations.

The Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater is a 299-seat venue which houses the nonprofit Lincoln Center Theater’s Off-Broadway productions. The theatre opened on November 10, 1967 and is located on the lower level of the building. At first, the Repertory Theater of Lincoln Center operated the theatre as The Forum.

The current name was adopted in 1973 in honor of prominent New York philanthropist Mitzi E. Newhouse. Joseph Papp’s New York Shakespeare Festival took control of the building until 1978. In the following years, the theatre was mostly rented out to external producers until LCT began operating there in 1985.
