Atlantic Theater Company has named the cast for its production of Indian Princesses off Broadway, running at the Linda Gross Theater from April 30 to June 7. Opening night is May 19.
The Indian Princesses cast includes Ben Beckley as Wayne, Anissa Marie Griego as Lili, Rebecca Jimenez as Andi, Greg Keller as Chris, Serenity Mariana as Hazel, Pete Simpson as Mac, Lark White as Maisey, Haley Wong as Samantha, and Frank Wood as Glen.
Indian Princesses follows five girls of color and their white fathers at a camp-like summer program meant to bond families, but which sparks questions in the girls their dads may not be able to answer — or don't want to. The play is written by Eliana Theologides Rodriguez and directed by Miranda Cornell in their Off-Broadway debuts.
The production also features sets by Emmie Finckel, costumes by Sarafina Bush, lights by Mextly Couzin, sound by Salvador Zamora, and dramaturgy by Sierra Rosetta.
“Though I wrote this play as a comedy, its impetus was in part inspired by my own family history and the assimilationist agenda the United States employed to rob us of our heritage," Rodriguez said in a statement. "The same heritage that was then repackaged and sold back to us generations later as a family-friendly after school activity. This is what the phrase 'Indian Princess' represents to me now: the rewriting of history, the subjugation of an identity, and the confusion of being a little girl in a nation that denies you your power as it crowns you a princess.”
