About Indian Princesses
See this exquisite and deeply felt new play by rising voice Eliana Theologides Rodriguez. A gentle satire about a camp where girls of color go to bond with their white dads, Indian Princesses plays for a limited run only at the Atlantic's Linda Gross Theater in a co-production with Rattlestick Theater.
Rodriguez and director Miranda Cornell make their auspicious debuts off Broadway with this singular new play that heralds a major new voice in American theatre. Coming to the theatre that has given life to giants like Kimberly Akimbo, The Band's Visit, and Spring Awakening, Indian Princesses is an ambitious work with a beating heart and plenty of laughs.
Welcome to a special summer camp, where five young girls of color and their white fathers bond in 2008, just months before Barack Obama is elected to his first historic term. There are handmade activities, camp-like adventures, and, yes, a heavy dose of cultural appropriation.
But, after all the bonding, where can these girls go when the program ignites questions that their fathers are unable – or unwilling – to answer? A personal piece, Indian Princesses is inspired by the playwright’s own experiences in a similar father-daughter program. A smart and insightful new play that explores the stories we tell and the histories we omit, Indian Princesses cleverly navigates family, race, and girlhood in startling fresh ways.
This new play was developed through The Terrence McNally Foundation, a New York City nonprofit dedicated to uplifting bold new voices. Now, Indian Princesses makes its New York premiere after its West Coast one at La Jolla Playhouse. Exploring the truths that live inside us, waiting to come out, Indian Princesses promises a one-of-a-kind story for parents and children.
