The Sound of Music fun facts
Learning more about The Sound of Music is easy as do-re-mi with these fun facts.
- Original director Vincent J. Donehue initially conceived The Sound of Music as a play with songs from the von Trapps’ own repertoire. However, it was later agreed that it should be a musical vehicle for Mary Martin with an original score.
- Many people think "Edelweiss" is an actual Austrian folk song, but it was written for The Sound of Music! In fact, neither the song nor the musical as a whole were well-received in Austria at first, but its popularity has grown as Sound of Music filming locations became major tourist attractions.
- In real life, the eldest von Trapp child was a boy called Rupert. His siblings were named Agathe, Maria, Werner, Hedwig, Johanna, and Martina.
- The seven children in the original Broadway production were nominated collectively for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, including the two boys. (The award was won by Patricia Neway, who played the Mother Abbess.)
- The nuns’ music is a highlight of the show. Richard Rodgers did his research at Manhattanville College in Purchase, New York, where Mother Morgan, head of the music department, invited him to a concert of religious music she conducted. Instead of an overture, the show opens with the Catholic prayer “Dixit Dominus” set to music.
- Lincoln Center has previously presented productions of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel (directed by Nicholas Hytner) and South Pacific and The King and I (both directed by Bartlett Sher).
