'Back to the Future' sets Broadway closing date
The award-winning musical adaptation of the hit 1985 sci-fi film about a time-traveling teenager has played at the Winter Garden Theatre since 2023.
Its future is short. Back to the Future will close on Broadway, playing its final performance at the Winter Garden Theatre on January 5. At the time of closing, the show will have played 632 total Broadway performances.
Back to the Future premiered on Broadway in 2023 following a world premiere in London, where it won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical. The show, adapted from the same-named 1985 sci-fi movie, follows teenager Marty McFly as he travels from 1985 to 1955 in a time-hopping DeLorean car. When Marty accidentally prevents his teenage parents from meeting each other and falling in love, he must get them together to save his own existence.
"The musical adaptation, now on Broadway with 1.21 gigawatts of spectacle [...] gives Back to the Future the larger-than-life presentation it deserves," New York Theatre Guide's four-star review reads.
Bob Gale, who co-wrote the Back to the Future film's screenplay, wrote the musical's book. Original songs are by Alan Silvestri, who composed the film's score, and Glen Ballard. The musical also features songs from the movie including “The Power of Love,” “Johnny B. Goode,” and "Earth Angel."
The current Back to the Future Broadway cast includes 2024 Tony Award nominee Roger Bart as Doc Brown, Casey Likes as Marty McFly, Evan Alexander Smith as George McFly, Liana Hunt as Lorraine Baines, Jelani Remy as Goldie Wilson/Marvin Berry, Nathaniel Hackmann as Biff Tannen, Mikaela Secada as Jennifer Parker, and David Josefsberg as Strickland.
