‘Assassins’ to reopen Classic Stage Company, as new season announced

John Doyle will step down as artistic director.

The upcoming season at Classic Stage Company will include Assassins and A Man of No Importance, with in-person performances beginning in November 2021. Classic Stage Company's artistic director, John Doyle, will also depart from the organization in summer 2022, with his incumbent to be announced.

"I will always treasure the privilege of having led this terrific company" says John Doyle. Speaking about his tenure, he continued to say: "I greatly look forward to my final season and am very excited for all that lies in CSC's future."

18 months after it was due to open, Assassins will receive its off-Broadway revival at Classic Stage Company from November 2021. The Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman musical explores the individuals that either attempted to or successfully killed a serving President.

The Assassins cast includes Will Swenson as Charles Guiteau and Judy Kuhn as Sara Jane Moore, alongside Adam Chanler-Berat, Eddie Cooper, Tavi Gevinson, Brad Giovanine, Andy Grotelueschen, Bianca Horn, Whit K. Lee, Rob Morrison, Steven Pasquale, Ethan Slater, Wesley Taylor, Brandon Uranowitz, and Katrina Yaukey.

Inspired by Homer's The Odyssey, Marcus Gardley has reimagined the epic Greek poem to be set in Harlem. black odyssey centres on Ulysses Lincoln, a Black soldier returning from Afghanistan to reunite with his family. Stevie Walker Webb directs, with casting, a further creative team and performance dates for black odyssey to be confirmed.

In spring 2022, Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig's Snow in Midusmmer will receive its New York premiere. Snow in Midusmmer is inspired by Guan Hanqing's Chinese drama The Injustice to Dou Yi that Moved Heaven, and follows a businesswoman whose life is changed when she takes ownership of a factory. Zi Alikhan directs, with casting, a further creative team and performance dates to be announced.

Terrence McNally, Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens' A Man of No Importance rounds off the season, with performances in fall 2022. John Doyle directs A Man of No Importance, which follows an amateur theatre group led by Alfie Byrne in 1960s Dublin try to stage Oscar Wilde's Salome. Casting and a further creative team are to be named.
