Get Mix and Master tickets when they go on sale on New York Theatre Guide to see Tony Award winners Ruben Santiago-Hudson and Kara Young star in the latest play from MacArthur "Genius Grant" winner Dominique Morisseau. Mix and Master plays at the Todd Haimes Theatre, coming to Roundabout Theatre Company's 2026/27 season. Morisseau's newest play follows a record shop in the Bronx, now on its final spin: as its doors threaten to shutter, can the music be kept alive?
Mix and Master on Broadway is a big story about a small business: an Obie Award winner and Tony Award nominee, Morisseau is known for documenting the lives of ordinary workers whose hands make magic. She did that in Skeleton Crew, her Broadway play about car manufacturers, and also in Paradise Blue, which also concerned a jazz musician, as in Mix and Master. Now in that newest play, she looks at an elder leader and a newer voice who share a passion for music but differing perspectives on the future of its business.
In the play, directed by Kamilah Forbes, executive producer of the Apollo Theater, a record store may close, but a DJ on the rise isn't ready to let the business fall just yet. A fight for the shop, however, transforms into a musical clash of generations. What follows becomes a reckoning over legacy and survival, backed by a live DJ set throughout.
Santiago-Hudson and Young are two Broadway forces who come together for roles that will surely spark fireworks. A writer and director (including of Morisseau's Skeleton Crew), Santiago-Hudson is also known for his formidable but amiable stage roles, and Young is the first Black actress to win two consecutive Tony Awards.
