Three of the world’s most celebrated musicians perform three powerful, idiosyncratic piano trios. The first half of the program is steeped in Jewish music and memory, pairing Rosowsky’s rarely performed Fantastic Dance on Hebrew Themes for Piano Trio with Shostakovich’s devastating Piano Trio No. 2, a searing expression of both intense personal grief and freshly discovered horrors perpetrated during World War II. Tchaikovsky’s immense, sole Piano Trio follows. A wide-ranging and folk-infused musical elegy, it is a notable predecessor to Shostakovich’s trio, and yet it remains one-of-a-kind in its fascinating, masterful construction.
