About The Dinosaurs
See Jacob Perkins' one-of-a-kind play about recovery, female friendship, and the innately human battle between holding on and letting go. The Dinosaurs plays off Broadway at Playwrights Horizons, a leading new-play generator that has produced multiple Pulitzer Prize-winning works. Now, The Dinosaurs marks the exciting Playwrights debut of Perkins, a writer who offers "a fearless and pointed look at the human condition" (Gay City News).
In The Dinosaurs off Broadway, every week at the same time, in the same place, a group of women share their stories of recovery. They meet and meet, and time goes on: as weeks slip into years and decades spiral into eternity, the women keep returning to one another amidst an ever-shifting, unfamiliar world. The play is a cosmic, sharply funny, and deeply loving portrait of what it means to hold on and let go.
It also has elements of the unknown, making it a perfect companion for director Les Waters, whose Obie Award-winning work has helped make plays like The Christians, The Thin Place, and others a success. Such is fitting for a writer who conjures magic.
"Jacob Perkins' plays feel like spare spells, for the marshaling of particular and delicate energies," Agnes Borinsky, for Culturebot, wrote. "I often find myself blindsided by the worlds he so delicately assembles – listening quietly and then walloped by a flood of tears."
An accomplished writer, Perkins was a winner of the 2020 Biennial Commission from Clubbed Thumb, the inaugural recipient of the DVRF/O’Henry Emerging Playwright Award, and is an alumnus of Ars Nova’s Play Group, Soho Rep.’s Writer/Director Lab, and Page 73’s Summer Residency at Yale. He is also a clinical mental health counselor and researcher.

A group of women attend AA meetings over the span of several years, time is elastic.
This was a moving, spare play that movingly explores the challenges of being human. I loved that it featured a broad range of women—from young to old—and connected them through the recovery group depicted. That actors were all great. Definitely recommend.
An unclear story about an all-female AA group
