Brooklyn Laundry Information
Oscar-, Tony Award-, and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer John Patrick Shanley returns off Broadway to direct Brooklyn Laundry, his latest world-premiere play. Get Brooklyn Laundry tickets on New York Theatre Guide.
Three sisters and a guy walk into the laundromat he owns — no, that's not the start of a joke, but the premise of the Brooklyn Laundry play. This tragicomic story sees the quartet go through life's savage tricks, little things that turn out to be big things, and all the other ups and downs that come with fully being an adult.
Shanley, a Bronx native, often sets his plays in New York City, and the same is true for Brooklyn Laundry off Broadway (as the title suggests). Similarly, New York's Manhattan Theatre Club, which presents Brooklyn Laundry, has long been a theatrical home for Shanley. The nonprofit theatre company has presented nine of his previous plays, beginning with Italian American Reconciliation in 1986. MTC is also the last place Shanley directed one of his own new plays: The Portuguese Kid, starring Jason Alexander, in 2017.
Fittingly for an NYC-born playwright, Brooklyn Laundry is actually the third Shanley play going up in the city in the 2023-24 season alone. The production follows an Off-Broadway revival of his early work Danny and the Deep Blue Sea in fall 2023 and a Broadway revival of his Pulitzer- and Tony-winning drama Doubt, beginning performances just four days before Brooklyn Laundry in New York.
Aside from his prolific theatre career, Shanley is best known for writing the Oscar-winning screenplay of the film Moonstruck — another story famously set in Brooklyn.
