Nollywood Dreams Information
Jocelyn Bioh's world-premiere play Nollywood Dreams is a new romantic comedy about finding stardom and dreaming big. Nollywood Dreams tickets are available on New York Theatre Guide now.
Nollywood Dreams is a play set in Lagos, Nigeria, in the 90s, when the country's film industry is booming and gaining worldwide popularity. The young ingenue Ayamma dreams of leaving her work at her parent's travel agency to make it big in Nollywood, and her celebrity-obsessed sister Dede only fuels Ayamma's longing to be a star herself. She finally gets a chance to audition for a major Nigerian director, Gbenga Ezie, but finds herself battling with Fayola, Ezie's go-to leading lady, for a part. Moreover, tensions between the rise as Ayamma is also dealing with another emotion: love, as a romance grows between her and Nollywood's most sought-after leading man.
Jocelyn Bioh's work was last seen at MCC Theater in 2017 with School Girls; Or, the African Mean Girls Play, which won the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play and the Outer Critics Circle John Gassner Award for New American Playwright. Both that play and Nollywood Dreams earned spots on the Kilroys' List, which highlights outstanding work by non-male playwrights, even before their premieres.
Saheem Ali directs the Nollywood Dreams Off-Broadway production, and the rest of the creative team includes lighting designer David Weiner, sound designer Palmer Hefferan, set designer Arnulfo Maldonado, costume designer Dede Ayite, and projection designer Alex Basco Koch.
