'The Piano Lesson,' starring Samuel L. Jackson and Danielle Brooks, sets Broadway premiere

August Wilson's play will open in fall 2022.

The first Broadway revival of August Wilson's Pulitzer-winning The Piano Lesson has set its dates and venue! The previously announced production, starring Samuel L. Jackson, Danielle Brooks, and John David Washington, will play a 16-week engagement at the St. James Theatre beginning September 19, 2022. Directing is Tony Award-nominated actor LaTanya Richardson Jackson, making her Broadway directorial debut and becoming the first woman to direct a Wilson play on Broadway.

Jackson, a 2022 Academy Award winner for lifetime achievement, made his Broadway debut in 1990 in The Piano Lesson. He was the understudy for Boy Willie, and he now returns to star as Doaker Charles in the show. Screen Actors Guild Award nominee John David Washington plays Boy Willie, and Grammy Award winner and Tony nominee Danielle Brooks plays Berniece.

The Piano Lesson follows a brother and sister who are fighting over whether to honor their family history by selling a family heirloom — a piano hand-carved by an enslaved ancestor — in order to buy the land where that ancestor worked, or to keep it. The play is set in Pittsburgh and is part of Wilson's The Pittsburgh Cycle, a series of shows about the 20th-century Black community living there.

Yale Repertory Theatre premiered The Piano Lesson in 1987 (with Jackson as Boy Willie) before its transfer to Broadway's Walter Kerr Theatre in 1990. That year, the show also won Wilson his second Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
