Sean Hayes to star in 'Good Night, Oscar' on Broadway this spring

The new play will go up at the Belasco Theatre.

Good day, Broadway! A new play by Doug Wright, Good Night, Oscar, will come to Broadway this spring, starring Will & Grace's Sean Hayes. The limited engagement runs from April 7 to August 27, 2023, with an opening night on April 24.

In Good Night, Oscar, Hayes plays the title character of Oscar Levant, a pianist, composer, and Hollywood actor known as much for his unpredictability as for his performance work. The play begins in 1958, when Levant shows off his signature wit on an episode of the Jack Paar show, sending audiences into fits of laughter and censors into overdrive.

Good Night, Oscar, directed by Lisa Peterson, had its world premiere at at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre earlier this year, also with Hayes in the lead.

Hayes is best known for his Emmy Award-winning role as Jack McFarland on NBC's Will & Grace; his performance also earned him four SAG Awards and six Golden Globe nominations. He has also appeared on Broadway in An Act of God and Promises, Promises, the latter of which earned him a Tony nomination. For hosting the 2010 Tony Awards, he won his second Emmy.

The Broadway cast of Good Night, Oscar also includes Emily Bergl as June Levant, Peter Grosz as Bob Sarnoff, Ben Rappaport as Jack Paar, and John Zdrojeski as George Gershwin. Additional casting has yet to be announced.

The show will play at the Belasco Theatre. Another new play, Ain't No Mo', will first run there from November to February.
