QuaranTune #28: "Thank U" from Jagged Little Pill

A show tune a day keeps the quarantine blues at bay...

Today's #QuaranTune comes to us from the self-isolating Broadway company of Jagged Little Pill, who are all currently on an enforced hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. And their message to those on the frontlines is simple: "Thank U."

Of course, "Thank U" began its life as a pop tune long before it evolved into a show tune. Written by 7-time Grammy Award-winning recording artist Alanis Morissette alongside Glen Ballard (whose musical theater credits include Ghost The Musical and the recent world premiere of Back to the Future: The Musical in the UK), "Thank U" was first released in October 1998. The single hit the #1 spot in Morissette's native Canada and was also nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of 'Best Female Pop Vocal Performance' in 2000.

The musical Jagged Little Pill staged its world premiere at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in May 2018, ahead of a Broadway premiere that began performances at the Broadhurst Theatre in November 2019. The principal cast includes Antonio Cipriano (as Phoenix), Kathryn Gallagher (as Bella), Celia Rose Gooding (as Frankie Healy), Logan Hart (as Andrew Montefiore), Derek Klena (as Nick Healy), Sean Allan Krill (as Steve Healy), Lauren Patten (as Jo), and Elizabeth Stanley (as Mary Jane Healy).

We hope that we get to see the entire cast together again on the stage of the Broadhurst Theatre. Until then, here's their heartfelt tribute...

And for all the Alanis fans out there, here's the 1998 original...

These are no times for the weak of heart. One step, one prayer, I soldier on.
