Michael R. Jackson's 'White Girl in Danger' to premiere off Broadway

Vineyard Theatre and Second Stage co-produce the new musical.

A new musical by Pulitzer, Tony, and Drama Desk Award-winning writer Michael R. Jackson, titled White Girl in Danger, is set to premiere off Broadway in 2023. Performances run from March 15 to May 21, with an opening night on April 10.

Jackson is best known for his semi-autobiographical musical A Strange Loop, which is currently running on Broadway. After its 2019 Off-Broadway premiere, the show won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and many Off-Broadway awards, and its Broadway production won the 2022 Tony Awards for Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical. His new musical comedy is set in the fictional soap opera town of Allwhite. In White Girl in Danger, the white characters have lives filled with juicy intrigue, while the "Blackground" characters's stories are only about suffering. One of those characters, Keesha, decides to step into the foreground, but her choice affects the lives of the other Black characters and, with a killer on the loose in Allwhite, potentially puts her in danger.

Lileana Blain-Cruz directs; she received a Tony nomination last season for The Skin of Our Teeth and also helmed Dreaming Zenzile off Broadway. Choreography is by Raja Feather Kelly, who also choreographed A Strange Loop and Suffs.

White Girl in Danger is a co-production between Vineyard Theatre and Second Stage Theater, and the show will be performed in Second Stage's Tony Kiser Theater.

Casting, additional creative team, and performance dates have yet to be announced.
