LaChanze to star in ‘Trouble in Mind’ at American Airlines Theatre

'Trouble in Mind' begins performances in October.

LaChanze is a Tony Award-winning actress, best known for playing Celie in the original Broadway production of The Color Purple. She's also starred in Once on This Island, Summer: The Donna Summer Musical and the Ghost of Christmas Present in A Christmas Carol at the Lyceum Theatre. Further casting for Trouble in Mind is to be announced.

First staged Off-Broadway in 1955, Trouble in Mind follows Willetta, a Black actress who is rehearsing for a Broadway show. Themes of racism in American theatre are tackled, as well as the Civil Rights Movement; Trouble in Mind never received its Broadway transfer in the 1950s.

Trouble in Mind is by Alice Childress, with direction by Charles Randolph-Wright. Scenic design is by Arnulfo Maldonado, with costume design by Emilio Sosa, lighting design by Kathy A. Perkins and sound design by Dan Moses Schreier. Original music is by Nona Hendryx.

Trouble in Mind is at the American Airlines Theatre from October 29.
