Flying Over Sunset is coming down from its high. The new musical will end its limited run at Lincoln Center Theater's Vivian Beaumont Theater on January 16, three weeks earlier than the originally scheduled closing date of February 6.

Flying Over Sunset was first scheduled to premiere in spring 2020, but the run was rescheduled for 2021 due to the pandemic. After beginning performances on November 11, 2021 and opening on December 13, the show will have played 28 preview performances and 35 regular performances at the time of closing.

The original musical centers on the lives of three historical figures — Aldous Huxley (Harry Hadden-Patton), Clare Boothe Luce (Carmen Cusack), and Cary Grant (Tony Yazbeck), who all experimented with LSD in the mid-20th century. Set in the 1950s, Flying Over Sunset depicts each one's individual experiences taking the drug, then imagines a day in Malibu where they all meet to take the drug together.

The New York Theatre Guide review praised the show's design team, reading, "The show's real star is its elaborate production. Toni Leslie-James's costumes are mid-century mouthwatering. Beowulf Boritt's sets, glamorously lit by Bradley King, summon a drugstore, airy homes, a shrink's office, and a Malibu beach, and are crisp and beautiful." The creative team is also led by director and book writer James Lapine, composer Tom Kitt, lyricist Michael Korie, and choreographer Michelle Dorrance.

The next scheduled show at the Vivian Beaumont Theater is a revival of Thornton Wilder's Pulitzer-winning play The Skin of Our Teeth, directed by Lileana Blain-Cruz. The show begins Broadway performances March 31 and opens April 25.
