'The Hills of California' sets Broadway cast
The award-winning play written by Jez Butterworth and directed by Sam Mendes features multiple actors from its critically acclaimed world premiere in London.
The Hills of California on Broadway has set initial casting ahead of its North American premiere at the Broadhurst Theatre this fall. Performances begin September 11 ahead of a September 29 opening.
The eight cast members announced all led the play's world-premiere run in London last fall. They include Olivier Award winner and Tony nominee Laura Donnelly as Joan/Veronica, Leanne Best as Gloria, Ophelia Lovibond as Ruby, Helena Wilson as Jill, Nancy Allsop as Young Gloria, Sophia Ally as Young Ruby, Lara McDonnell as Young Joan, and Nicola Turner as Young Jill.
Additional casting has yet to be announced.
As previously announced, the creative team includes scenic and costume designer Rob Howell, lighting designer Natasha Chivers, choreographer Ellen Kane, musical supervisor and arranger Candida Caldicot, and composer, sound designer, and arranger Nick Powell.
Written by Jez Butterworth and directed by Sam Mendes, The Hills of California follows four sisters who reunite at their childhood home as their mother is dying. The play jumps between their adulthood and their childhood, when they were aspiring performers who were offered an opportunity to get their big break and escape. Each girl made a different choice with different consequences that they now have to reckon with.
London Theatre's five-star review calls the show a "new masterpiece" and "a slick production in which not a word, not even a breath, is wasted."
