The Book of Mormon on Broadway will temporarily close due to a three-alarm fire at its venue, the Eugene O'Neill Theatre, that broke out on Monday morning, May 4.

The New York Times first reported on the show's temporary closure. David Simms, an assistant chief at the New York Fire Department, was quoted as saying, “The building is going to be out of service, pending repairs. There’s been substantial damage on the fourth floor, in the electrical room, which contains lighting equipment and hanging chandeliers.”

The fire broke out in an electrical room on the O'Neill's fourth and fifth floors, and between the fifth floor and the roof. It was declared under control by 12:17 p.m., per the Times report. The cause is under investigation.

The Book of Mormon does not perform on Mondays, but performances beginning Tuesday, May 5, will be affected. New York Theatre Guide will report on further updates, including a projected reopening date for The Book of Mormon, when announced.

The Book of Mormon has run at the O'Neill since 2011, when it won nine Tony Awards including Best Musical. The show is currently celebrating its 15th-anniversary year, with a "Mystery Week", featuring guest appearances from original cast members, slated for the week of June 9-14.

In a joint statement given to the Times, The Book of Mormon and theatre owner Ambassador Theater Group said they would “take time to assess the extent of the damage, and any news of disruption to performances will be announced as soon as possible.”
