'Mamma Mia!' to return to Broadway this summer
The hit musical comedy featuring the songs of ABBA will play a limited six-month engagement at the Winter Garden Theatre, its original venue, from August.
Here we go again! Mamma Mia! will return to Broadway this summer, playing for six months only, from August 2 to February 1, 2026. Opening night is August 14. The show will perform at the Winter Garden Theatre, the same venue where the first production of Mamma Mia! on Broadway originated its record-breaking run.
Set to the songs of iconic Swedish pop group ABBA, Mamma Mia! takes place on a Greek island paradise, where a young woman seeks to reunite with the dad she never met ahead of her wedding — and invites all three possible candidates to attend, to her mother's shock.
Mamma Mia! first played on Broadway from 2001 to 2015, playing 5,733 total performances and becoming the ninth-longest-running show of all time. A film adaptation starring Meryl Streep was released in 2008, and a sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, came out in 2018.
The Broadway revival features music and lyrics by ABBA members Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, a book by Catherine Johnson, direction by Phyllida Lloyd, choreography by Anthony Van Laast, production design by Mark Thompson, lighting design by Howard Harrison, sound design by Andrew Bruce and Bobby Aitken, and musical supervision, additional material, and arrangements by Martin Koch. All worked on the original production of Mamma Mia!
“When Mamma Mia! opened on Broadway in 2001, the show had already launched productions in London and Toronto and played a sold-out North American tour," creator and producer Judy Craymer said in a statement. "Despite the glowing reception we received in those markets, nothing could have prepared us for the outpouring of love and acclaim (and dancing in the aisles!) that overwhelmed us when we arrived in New York at the magnificent Winter Garden Theatre.
“Last year, Mamma Mia! celebrated 25 successful years in the West End, and it’s truly fantastic to bring the original production back to its Broadway home after 24 years.
“With Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus’ irresistible songs, Catherine Johnson’s wonderful story of a sunny, funny tale of a mother, daughter, and three possible dads on a Greek island paradise, Phyllida Lloyd’s brilliant direction and the entire creative team’s exceptional work, returning to Broadway is a celebration for all.”
Casting for Mamma Mia! on Broadway has yet to be announced.
