It's tru: Jesse Tyler Ferguson will star in a revival of Tru off Broadway this spring, playing celebrated author Truman Capote. The production will run for six weeks only, from March 6 to April 12, with opening night on March 19.
Jay Presson Allen's solo play Tru sees Capote alone in his apartment in 1975, at his breaking point as he confronts the consequences of his most scandalous work, including losing his elite and beloved social circle. The script is drawn entirely from the author’s own words.
Tony, Emmy, and Olivier Award winner Rob Ashford directed Ferguson in a staged reading of Tru in 2024 and now helms the fully staged production. Ferguson, best known as a five-time Emmy nominee for Modern Family, returns to the NYC stage after starring in the Shakespeare in the Park production of Twelfth Night last summer and winning a 2022 Tony Award for Take Me Out.
He will perform Tru in the 99-seat library of the House of the Redeemer, a venue located inside a historic Upper East Side mansion. The production is Tru's first New York revival since its Broadway premiere at the Booth Theatre in 1989, when Robert Morse won the Tony Award for his performance as Capote.
“I have long been fascinated by Truman Capote — both the man and his writing — and it is the honor of my career to be entrusted with playing him in the first New York revival of Tru," Ferguson said in a statement. "From the moment Rob Ashford and I first discussed the idea, I envisioned an intimate, environmental experience. I can't wait for audiences to encounter this play up close in the uniquely intimate, historic House of the Redeemer.”
Tru also features scenic decor and properties by Mike Harrison, lighting design by Emily Schmit, sound design by Christopher Darbassie, and dialect coaching by Kate Wilson.
