'Girl From the North Country' posts Jan. 23 closing date on Broadway
The musical, which is currently at the Belasco Theatre, hopes to reopen at a different venue later this spring.
The slow train is leaving the station. Girl From the North Country, Conor McPherson's musical grounded in the songbook of Bob Dylan, has announced that it will play its last performance at Broadway's Belasco Theatre on January 23. The musical is currently in talks to reopen at a different venue in the spring, with specifics on dates and location to be announced.
Girl From the North Country is the second production to announce a hiatus for the remaining winter months, a historically slow portion of the theatre season only complicated further by the spread of Covid-19's Omicron variant. Mrs. Doubtfire announced a nine-week hiatus that began on January 10; that musical plans to reopen at its existing venue, the Stephen Sondheim Theatre, on March 15.
Multiple other Broadway shows have closed prematurely in recent weeks, including Waitress, Jagged Little Pill, and Thoughts of a Colored Man, or are soon to close early, including Flying Over Sunset and Ain't Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations (both play their final performances on January 16). Find out what Broadway shows are currently running here.
Girl From the North Country is set at an inn in Great Depression-era Minnesota, and traces the ways in which the various guests change each other's lives, and those of the family that owns the inn, over the span of a few months as they come and go. After premiering in 2018 at The Public Theater, the show began performances on February 7, 2020 and opened on March 5. However, the show was soon shuttered due to the pandemic, but reopened again on October 13, 2021.
The five-star New York Theatre Guide review called the musical "one of those once-in-a-lifetime productions" in which "you see yourself juicy and glistening and raw - you see yourself as you never have before."
