Roundabout Theatre Company has named the full cast for Exception to the Rule, Dave Harris's world-premiere play directed by Miranda Haymon. Performances begin at the Black Box Theatre in the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre on April 28 ahead of a May 18 opening night.

The full cast includes MaYaa Boateng as Erika, Malik Childs as Tommy, Mister Fitzgerald as Abdul, Toney Goins as Dayrin, Amandla Jahava as Mikayla, and Claudia Logan as Dasani. Their characters are six Black students stuck in detention in an inner city high school. Five are familiar with the unspoken rules of detention, but one star-student newcomer is not. They pass the time by flirting, fighting, and teasing, all while wondering whether it's worthwhile to try and escape when it might not just be the classroom walls that are keeping them there.

Harris made his Off-Broadway debut as a playwright earlier this season with Tambo & Bones at Playwrights Horizons. Exception to the Rule is part of the Roundabout Underground program, which commissions and develops new works by new New York playwrights.
